距今2000多年前，正是中国东汉末年，群雄割据的时期。为了平定天下，三位被赋予天命历史英雄诞生了，宦官后代的曹操，编草鞋出身的刘备，将军之子孙权。他们三个分别建立了自己的国家魏、蜀、吴。这就是后人津津乐道的三国时期。故事以中国史上著名的皇帝·曹操为主角，他有着无人能及的人格魅力和超越世人的谋略。经典漫画《苍天航路》以《三国志》为题材，以曹操的一生为主线，叙述了其从五岁到六十六岁，波澜壮阔的一生。曹操的是是非非，在这漫画里，得到了很好的诠释。总的来说，《苍天航路》是一部不可多得的精品三国题材漫画。
一部演绎了众多风流人物的《三国志》不仅让国人如痴如醉，魅力更远届至邻邦，包括了动漫大国日本。在日本也曾经推出过多部以“三国”为题材的作品，但某些太过恶搞的题材在受到关注的同时也总是会引发如潮恶评，但这一部由旅居日本的李学仁（作，98年去世）与王欣太（画）联手打造、于1994年10月至2005年11月间一直在讲谈社的《MORNING》连载的《苍天航路》，由于走的是正剧路线，并且有自己独特的视角，并融入了中国的儒、道、法家等多种中国传统文化思想，从而得到了海内外众多三国FANS的追随。这部以曹操为主人公的超级大作，已经决定于2009年4月7日开始在日本电视台播出TV版动画了。
被喻为“画得最精彩的三国漫画”「苍天航路」，是由日籍人士李学仁（剧情）和王欣太（漫画）合作的作品，1994年10月至2005年11月连载于「周刊早安」上，一共出版了36卷单行本、总计发售达1200部。遗憾的是1998年李学仁先生因肝癌去世之后，其剧情的精彩度不如从前，然而总的来说仍不失为一部优秀作品。
本作将由知名动画制作社MadHouse改编成TV动画于4月播映，总监督是担当过「北斗神拳」等作的芦田丰雄。在日本也有呼风唤雨般人气的中国四大名著之一「三国志」中的奸雄曹操将成为本作的主人公。作品着重对于人物的刻画以及其内心的描写，让读者从中了解每一个被冠上英雄之名的人物背后的血泪故事。
而两大实力人气兼具的声优宫野真守和井上喜久子，将会联手出演本作的主角曹操。思及该作的设定和内容，预计未必能在4月那铺天盖地的新番狂潮中闯出一条大道，但仍具备几大观看亮点——登场人物超过200名，采用3DCG动态技术表现大军会战场面，而原作中一些比较血腥的场面，在动画中会有所收敛。
